Find your next just-right book!
The 22 Milestone Books on the Book Pathway are helpful markers on your own reading path. Read them, and their ATOS and Lexile numbers will help guide you to other books you will enjoy.
Head on your own book journey!
Once you know which "mile" you’re on, you can easily choose other books that are just right for you. You can find books that match your mile/level (or just check to see if you can read them pretty well- read a page and see if you can't decode three or more words).
Go further on your book pathway!
At any time, you can try to read the next milestone book to keep moving further on your reading journey. A good goal is to try reading at least one new milestone book every two months.
Share your thoughts about the books:
After you finish reading a milestone book, how do you illustrate your understanding? Here’s how:
Fluency Check:
Read one minute of the book aloud to someone who can already read it well. If you make 3 or fewer mistakes and can read at least 7 lines in a minute, you show that you’re fluent with the book.
Write about it and draw a picture:
In a book journal or on a page, write a short reflection. Draw an illustration that connects to the book.
Include the following:
Your name and date
Book title and author
A problem and resolution from the book
Something important you learned from the book (a life lesson, connection, or theme).
You can also add other books to your journal if they match the same reading level (the same “mile”) as your milestone book. You can ask your teacher or librarian to help you find books that match your level.
Choosing the Right Books:
Ask your teacher or librarian for help when picking books. You can use Lexile scores, ATOS numbers, or even the one-minute fluency check to find books that are the right level for you.
